This animation shows the CFD simulation of a car facing wind from the left. The car itself is basically stationary (no forward movement), but spinning around its center. This study was part of a safety check when regulations changed to ensure that the car wouldn’t lift from the ground even when out of control.

CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) is a great tool which is not only used for aerodynamic research, but also for simulations of all kinds of fluids in the race cars. Different from the wind tunnel, CFD also allows to calculate and simulate temperatures. The two complement each other perfectly.

The Sauber F1 Team looks forward to the Monaco Grand Prix. After the upgrades the team took to Barcelona were a step in the right direction, further updates will follow in Monaco…

Nico Hülkenberg (car number 11):
“…This is a great challenge between me, the car and the track, and I always have a lot of fun driving there. In terms of performance, I’m quite positive. We’ve seen that the softer tyre compounds suit us quite well, which gives me confidence we’ll have a good weekend.”

Esteban Gutierrez (car number 12):
“…It’s a high down force track with a lot of slow corners, and management of the rear tyres will be crucial. After the positive race in Barcelona, I am focusing on building on my performance there.”

Tom McCullough, Head of Track Engineering:
“…For Esteban it will be his first experience in a F1 car in Monaco, but his GP2 experience has given him a good reference. This will be the first race of the season where we use both the soft and super-soft tyres. We have some further updated aero parts to add to the package we took to Barcelona…”

Das Sauber F1 Team reist vorsichtig optimistisch zum Grossen Preis von Monaco in das Fürstentum. Nachdem die Modifikationen in Barcelona ein Schritt in die richtige Richtung waren, folgen nun zusätzliche Entwicklungsteile…

Nico Hülkenberg (Startnummer 11):
„…Ich finde das eine tolle Herausforderung zwischen mir, dem Auto und der Strecke und habe dort immer extrem viel Spass. Was unsere Performance angeht, bin ich recht optimistisch. Bisher hat man gesehen, dass uns die weicheren Reifenmischungen ganz gut liegen. Das stimmt mich positiv, dass wir ein gutes Wochenende haben werden.“

Esteban Gutiérrez (Startnummer 12):
„…Die Strecke hat viele langsame Kurven, deshalb wird das Reifenmanagement besonders wichtig sein, insbesondere die Hinterreifen werden stark belastet. Ich werde mich dieses Wochenende darauf fokussieren, auf das gute Rennen in Barcelona aufzubauen.“

Tom McCullough, Leitender Ingenieur an der Rennstrecke:
„…Esteban wird dort das erste Mal in einem Formel 1-Auto fahren, aber seine Erfahrungen in der GP2 werden eine gute Referenz sein. Es wird das erste Rennen sein, in dem uns Pirelli die weiche und super weiche Reifenmischung zur Verfügung stellt. Zusätzlich zu den Modifikationen, die wir in Barcelona hatten, werden wir weitere Aeroteile mit nach Monaco bringen…“
