ERS (Energy Recovery System; more details on the MGU-K and MGU-H will follow later today!)
ERS is not just a fancy name for a couch! It is, in fact, a very complex and powerful littleâ¦ something! It converts energy, which is generated by the moving car and components, and saves this energy in a big battery.
This energy can then be used to run 2 electric motors to add extra power (just think of your hairdryer or lawnmower). Surprisingly, a lot of power results from this system: It adds another 160 bhp (probably as much as your own car provides in total) to the power that already comes from the combustion engine! Thatâs double the power of the old KERS (the former Kynetic Energy Recovery System)!
Different from 2013, when KERS could only be used for 6.7 seconds per lap and was activated by a push of a button by the driver, maximum ERS power may be used for 33.33 seconds per lap and can be activated automatically every time the driver floors the accelerator.
The ERS will be programmed for each race track and activated by the engine management system (with different setups to choose from available to the driver on the steering wheel on a lap-by-lap basis).
The entire ERS consists of the MGU-K and MGU-H (details to follow), a âbattery packâ, the turbocharger (you know this!) and an electronic control system.
Full deployment of the ERS energy in one lap is expected to reduce lap time by 2 seconds or even more than that!
